From Trash to Treasure: Spreading Joy in Bali’s Forgotten Community
🌍A story of humanity, hope, and a schoolyard surprise on the island of the gods.
Tucked away on the outskirts of Bali, beyond the rice fields, beaches, and postcard perfect tourist scenes, there lies a very different world. A place few speak about. A place most never see.

Here, next to Bali’s national plastic recycling plant a chaotic sprawl of forgotten waste and discarded things lives a community of people who’ve been discarded, too. Families survive by sifting through mountains of trash, day in and day out, salvaging recyclable scraps in exchange for just enough rupiah to afford a little food, a little rice, maybe some cooking oil.
They live in makeshift shelters of rusted tin and scrap wood. They have no running water.
No access to fresh food. Children grow up surrounded by waste instead of wonder. And yet they smile.
They welcome you with the kind of warmth that makes your heart ache. It was here that the Butterfly Effect decided to bring its mission of compassion next.

🎁Operation: Joy & Nourishment
On July 1st, the Butterfly Effect team in Bali rallied together with one goal: to love and lift this community in any way we could.
We started by building care packages not just any care packages, but boxes packed with thoughtfulness. We purchased over $1,000 worth of essential supplies: cooking oil, sacks of rice, dried foods, hygiene items, and enough nutrition to feed a family for over two months.
We filled up an entire truck with these packages.
But that wasn’t all.
We discovered a small, donation-funded local school in the heart of the community. It was under-resourced but full of spirit filled with children who still held the spark of childhood, even in the harshest of conditions. And we knew… this was our chance to create something unforgettable.
So, we did what we do best.
We turned up at the toy store and emptied the shelves. With over $2,000 worth of toys and school supplies, we filled not one, but two whole cars. Dolls, balls, art supplies, puzzles, backpacks you name it. Then we strapped it all in, jumped on our bikes, and made our way to the edge of the landfill where our truck and drivers were waiting.

🧸The Gift of Play
When we arrived, the midday sun cast long shadows over the earth, but the energy in the air was light.
We made our way to the school, where dozens of kids were playing in the dirt courtyard.
The teachers looked on with curiosity. And then… the surprise began.
We gathered the children outside and opened the back of the truck. Music began to play.
The kids looked on, wide-eyed, as we brought out box after box after box. Then we let the magic unfold.
We let the kids rip open the boxes, dance to the music, play with their new toys, and laugh like only kids can. The air filled with the sound of pure joy.
There were no rules. No structure. Just freedom. Play. Connection. It was beautiful chaos the kind that leaves you standing still with a lump in your throat.
After the celebration, we spent time with them, played, shared stories, and made memories. But our mission wasn’t finished yet.

🚴Delivering Hope, Door to Door
We hopped back on our bikes, loaded up the truck with care packages, and began driving through the narrow alleyways of this forgotten community. House by house, family by family, we knocked on doors and handed over the packages. No words were needed just smiles, handshakes, and tears.
The truth is, while these people have almost nothing in a material sense, they possess something most of the world has lost: presence. Gratitude. Connection to life. They are, in many ways, richer than we are.
This experience reminded us that sometimes, the less you have, the more open your heart becomes.
