While travelling through South Africa, we met a 13-year-old boy named Uthman. From the moment we spoke to him, you could feel his strength.
He should have been in school. He should have been playing with friends, laughing, and living the kind of childhood every kid deserves.
Instead, he was fighting for his life.

When I asked Uthman why he wasn't at school, he answered with a calmness far beyond his years. He told me he had cancer.
He had already gone through chemotherapy twice. And now he was going through treatment all over again.
I asked him if he was going to keep fighting. Without hesitation, he looked at me and said

Then we spoke with his mother. She had given up her job to stay by his side and care for him through treatment. Every day was a struggle searching for food, trying to survive, travelling long distances to the hospital with no reliable transport.
She once had a car, but eventually had to give it up because she could no longer afford it.
They were carrying more than any family should ever have to carry alone. Still, they kept going.
